What are vintage frames?
Vintage frames are any frames that are no longer manufactured.
The collection that you see here is a mix of 'new' vintage frames (never been worn) and 'gently used' vintage frames. We list the condition of each frame first and pricing is done based on condition. We don't sell a frame that is going to fall apart. If you purchase a gently used vintage frame, rest assured it has been reconditioned and is wearable. If there ever has been any repair work done to the frame, we have noted it in the description.
Our vintage frames run from the turn of the 20th century to the late 1980's.
We have divided them into classifications that seem to make the most sense. This is only a partial collection so if you are looking for one particular frame or a style that you do not see here, give us a call, we probably have it.
Can I get lenses with that?
Yes, any frame we sell we can supply lenses or you may take them to a local optical shop. The few frames that cannot have your lenses put in
are noted and sold as collectibles only. The process by which these lenses were manufactured and mounted has totally died out and the machining is no longer available.
Prices for the lenses with no prescription are noted if you click on the 'lenses available' note on any frame. The prices are listed for clear, gradient tint, sunglass and polaroid lenses. If you wish to put your prescription in the lenses, we will need more info, please email us for the info or give us a call.
What does condition mean? How tough a frame is? or what?
Toughness has nothing to do with it.
We prefer to classify all our frames in one of four ways, if a frame does not fit into one of these categories, we won't sell it.
Mint-Never been worn
Excellent-Has been worn but you can't tell it
Very Good -Has been worn and has a couple small scratches
Good-Has been worn and has more than a couple small scratches, but still in great shape
And composition: who composed what when?
Composition is what the frame is made out of, you will usually see zyl, which is just a generic classification for all types of plastics,
lucites and acrylics. Generally, the composition of the zyl doesn't matter to the end user, but it does affect how the frame is treated in the lab when its getting lenses.
Metal frames are also a pretty generic classification.
Metal composition can be any number of combinations of metal or plate. Most older frames, 50's and older, were stamped with there percentage of gold content. That is why you'll see many of the frames noted as 1/10 12 KGF. This is a gold filled frame, the same principle as gold filled jewelry. There are also solid gold frames, but we don't have one in the collection right now.
Combo are just that, combinations of metal and zyl. This became really popular in the 40's and 50's and has stayed popular till
today.
Rentals, you have rentals!????
Many times there are productions or plays that need frames for a period piece.
We are happy to rent these pieces. Please email us with your needs. Don't be lulled into thinking that these are our only frames. The last count was a little over 2000. So I'm sure that we can find the style and quantity that you'll need.
