These rugs are hand knotted, hand woven rugs done in a process that is thousands of years old, originating in central
Asia. The pile is all wool and the warp and weft of the rug are also wool unless otherwise indicated.
The warp of a carpet are the long strands of the foundation.
The weft goes across, in and out between the warp. Every junction between warp and weft has a piece of colored yarn tied to it. The colors vary to form the pattern.
As one can easily imagine this is a very time consuming process.
A 4' X 6' rug can take months of work for 2 people. Larger rugs have more people working on them.
Because of this ancient construction, these rugs last for many decades, even with hard use.
Rugs of one hundred years of age are not unusual. (These are considered antique and are available upon request.)
Most of our pieces are woven by Afghani refugees in camps inside Pakistan.
They provide work for theses people who have been forced out of their homeland.
Your purchase of a rug not only introduces an heirloom piece into your family, but it helps these Afghanis as well.
In the future we will also be carrying traditional Tibetian carpets.
We can get many other types of rugs too, so if your are looking for something in particular, contact us.
Thank you for considering the Schoolhouse Gem Gallery Studio as your source of unique items.
